I get a lot of questions e-mailed to me so I thought I would take a minute and respond to the most common ones. In no specific order.

 


 

Q: Why is this server free ?

A: Initially I set up this server for my two children, so they could have a safe and free place to build with their friends, naturally it needed to have all the cool features that the mainstream servers had too. I eventually decided that I like to build in Minecraft, enjoy running the server, and get an environment to test my MC plugins at the same time....so...we advertised the server.


 

Q: Is there a foreseeable end in sight for Creative Universal ? 

A: No, I simply enjoy running the server too much and with no operating costs there's no chance I will shut the server down. I enjoy the server all by myself, if there are additional people playing its a perk. So, even if no one played on the server for 6 months it would still be here all lonely running.


 

Q: Why are there so many staff members and so few players ?

A: I've never really advertised the server except on 2-3 sites. There are so many new and updated advertisements for servers that advertisements are almost ineffective 2 days from posting because they fall so far away from the first few pages of searches with in a week.


 

Q: How many unique visitors has the server had ?

A: There have been 398 Unique visitors to this server, currently there are about 10-14 users that frequent the server every day.


Q: Do you intend to do more Advertising ?

A: Yes. I plan on doing a lot of advertising over the course of the next several months. Including a trailer and videos on YouTube.


Q: If you get enough members on this server will you eventually start to charge people for ranks or accept donations and have donator ranks ?

A: No, the would go against the whole notion of providing a free server for those smart enough to take advantage of it.


Q: Do I have to sign up for the web-site and register in order to be able to play on your server ?

A: No, all you have to do is point your MC client to play.creativeuniversal.net

 

 

We now have ShopChests running on the server, which makes it possible for you to create a shop and sell items to other players. There are a few simple requirements that you need to consider, which is why I am releasing this article.

Some Requirements:

  • You can not create a shop with-in 18 blocks of a server spawn, Spawn protection will prevent them from functioning properly
  • You should create a shop only on claimed land, or people can destroy the land around it.
  • You should not create it on your main claim, because you have to give people access to the chest. If you do this on your main claim they will have access to all chests on that claim.
  • If you already have a large plot, you should create a subdivision (claim with-in a claim) by following these steps:
    • while holding a golden shovel enter the command /subdevideclaim.
    • Mark two corners to represent the claimed area. If successful the sub-claim will be highlight in white wool.

Directions:

  1. Create a claim for your shop, or create a subdivision in your existing claim.
  2. Place a chest in the claim, and place the items you want to sell inside it.
  3. WHILE STANDING INSIDE the claim/subdivision created for your store issue the command:
    /containertrust public
  4. While holding the item you wish to sell type the following:
    /shop create <QUANTITY> <BUYPRICE><SELLPRICE>
  5. Touch the Chest as instructed after issuing the command.

The quantity represents how many of the item(s) the user gets for the asking price.

WARNING: if you issue the /containertrust public command while not standing on a claim then you will  be granting chest, door, switch, container, and button access to ALL OF YOUR CLAIMS. so be very careful with this command!

 

 

This week I've been working on a non-invasive Minecraft control panel. By non-invasive I mean it requires no plugin to be added to the MC server and as a result adds no additional workloads to the Minecraft Server. The Control panel is written as a Microsoft c# WPF .NET 4.5 Application. Right now the control panel shows a configurable number of lines of out-put in a mock-console window and accepts command input from the end-user. Additionally the control panel tracks the memory usage , Process ID, the port, and the public IP address of the server. The current dev version also supports having a reboot schedule which cleanly stops and restarts the server daily at a predetermined time. 

 The memory tracker automatically scales itself based on the configured XMS and XMX properties set for the server. I've added a properties class which can read and write to server.properties and as of today have incorporated JSON.NET so that I can read and write the MC ops, whitelist and various other JSON formatted files.

 May 22, 2015 Update

  • Got my hands on JSON.NET and can now read and write to from ops.json, banned-players.json, and so on. I've added an object class for Operators (ops) and BannedPlayers and got them incorporated in to the UI.
  • Next steps to include right-click context menus for the tree views so you can pardon the banned or de-op ops right from the UI with no need for commands.
